A scholastic appraisal of the four gospels, their age and authorship, and connection to the Pauline version of Christianity versus the teachings of Jesus and the Jewish Christian Ministry of his brother James the Just, Peter and the rest of the apostles all of whom actually knew Jesus and were eyewitnesses to his life. Also presented are the other versions of Christianity that were suppressed by the Pauline Catholic Church in the Fourth Century A. D.If you truly want to follow the teachings of Jesus, it would be best to investigate this book along with the excellent bibliography included. As I never was impressed with St. Paul, formerly known as Saul a Roman collaborator and Christian foe who never met Jesus, and the Church that grew from his writings. Paul admits that he's going to Damascus to infiltrate the Christian Community so how is this enemy going to get accepted? Oh wow I had a vision, and this is what is accepted over the people who knew Jesus. Notice that he has Roman citizenship, all the members of Herod's family/tribe were given Roman citizenship and they were not actually Jewish. Herod also destroyed the Jewish genealogies to the Jewish Priesthood and placed his own relatives into the Temple. This is why the Jews and Jesus were upset about the contamination of the Temple, and why both Jesus and James were targeted by the High Priests. This paragraph is from my own research and not included in this book although portions of it support my thesis.
I applaud those struggling to get to the true teaching of Jesus.

Brilliant! Years and years of knowing what Richard presents in his books has allowed me a long-time-coming exhale! Thank you Richard Hooper....time to visit Sedona again!
If you are at all interested in the history of christianity (and who should not be?) then you need to own/read this book. It is just fantastic. It is well written and compelling and if you do not come away from it smarter and better informed about how Christianity came to be then you really are not trying.
I have had to research the subject for a book I am writing and so over the last few years I have read dozens (literally) of books on the subject. From Borg Crossan, Ehrman, Schweitzer, Ingersoll, DeSouza, Dawkins, Dennet, Harris, Hitchens, and on and on and on. Those are all excellent authors writing about a subject that is, surpisingly, still coming to terms with discoveries ancient and modern.
One of the most startling things I have found is how few Christians have actually read the bible. I think it was Penn Gillette who said the surest way to turn a Christian into an athiest is to have them read the bible. The book IS full of contradictions and one must struggle (and ultimately fail) to try to read it as literal history.
It is a big subject but Hooper manages to pull of what few other authors can - he makes the material accessible and engaging and presents it in a no-nonsense manner that allows you to decide for yourself how to think about what he discusses.
So if Christians won't even read their bible I suppose it may be too much to ask that they read Hooper's book about how the bible came to be, what it says, what it means, and the like. But if you are not a head-in-the-sand christian then god has given you a gift that is this book. Don't miss out - it is a gift you will truly appreciate.
Okay, okay there are people out there who aren't going to get past the first chapter and scream that this book is blasphemy. The only reasons you believe that is either because you don't care or you refuse to believe what you have been taught is all WRONG!!! Do your homework and find out for yourself. This book and the authors other books are accurate and reliable. Remember always keep an open mind, epically in these times. It's time for a change for a better world.
Very scholarly treatise, and it makes me want to delve into the subject matter more deeply and extensively. But this is an exceptional synopsis on modern day scholarship on Christianity. Fundamentalist Christians are not likely to like or accept what is in this book. A note to people getting the kindle version, there are many errors with the scanning, from typos to missing words, you will need to fill these in for yourself, most are self evident, but some really change the meaning of sentences and I found that both distracting and disappointing. There seem to be this type of error every page or two. If this bothers you it might be better t0 get the printed version.
