*Huge spoiler alert*The plot is almost interesting enough to make me finish the book. The characters are annoying and unbelievable enough to make me not. The male protagonist is "man" enough to go around shooting at people, but in reality possesses the maturity of 13 year old boy. He would rather throw the woman he supposedly loves under the bus, lie to her and refuse to leave a job where he is told he must put his job ahead of his woman. The female protagonist is supposedly bad-ass enough to run her own search and rescue group and doesn't balk at slithering around in the snow and muck to rescue someone, and yet is sexually inexperienced enough to have never had sex in anything other than the missionary position. And these two have supposedly had a hot, steamy affair for quite some time...while having evidently tons of sex in one position only.
I'll be the first to admit that there is a huge suspension of disbelief that has to occur to enjoy erotic fiction, but this is just asking too much.

I really wanted to delete this book at the end of chapter 5, but I forced myself to read 25% of the book; finally giving up on it on page 3 of chapter 10. The characters are shallow and not likeable. They are not in love, but have a lust for each other they both try very hard to ignore. TREX demands so much secrecy and deceit that their definition of "need to know" is carried to such an extreme that it actually threatens to prevent them from accomplishing their goals. No real group would be so secretive with the necessary details to accomplish their goal that they would outright LIE to the search and rescue group they call in to help; but that is exactly what TREX is doing in this book. Without this overly contrived plot of LIES there is NO story at all.
Also, I found the complete absence of a Table of Contents to be very annoying.
I will NOT be reading any other titles in this series or anything else by this author.
This is the first book in the TREX series but can be read as the 1st or the 2nd. The action is suspenseful with twists, turns and many surprises. See how friends that are teammates keep each other safe on and off the missions. Try and keep track of the hot sexy men who think they will never fall to the females species. And read the sultry seductive sex scene that are tasteful but very steamy. It may be trying with their on and off attitudes towards each other but Kat and Spencer love each other from the first night they spent together. It has been and always will be there, now they just have to get through all the obstacles of rules, danger and crazy terrorists to trust what they feel.
I read mystery/suspense for years and am constantly searching for a great romantic suspense, but so far they all fall short. I stuck with Kat and Spence to the very end, but the plot took a little long to set up. The romance was believable, if a little sad. I've read other novels where the main female character had issues expressing her sexual desires in a previous iteration of the relationship, so that wasn't a huge stretch, but I did scoff at some of the things Kat hadn't done with Spence.
What I liked
There were enough believable potential bad guys that even though I was pretty sure I had him pegged, I wasn't 100% until the reveal (I knew it!).
Limited typos and not noticeable word transpositions, but one or two extra words thrown in.
Spence is exceedingly masculine, but with reasonably sensitive/insecure internal dialog.
Good sexual tension & steamy scenes.
Not so much
Kat does serious wilderness S&R, but doesn't have a gun? She was portrayed more helpless/clueless than she should have been based on her career & experience. (Lost in the woods, fear of water, no security system, etc.)
Kat puts up with shit she shouldn't and whines/acts overly dramatic for a 28 (?) year old.
Kat lives in a totally crap apartment, but owns her own successful company with government contracts. It just didn't fit.
Kat's overall character development left much to be desired.
Absolutely loved the story from beginning to end. Well written with great characters and dynamic relationships. TREX and K-SAR would have great stories on their own, but thrown together boy do they sizzle. Kay and Spencer are the key characters in this story and the love they have for their work and each other along with their personal histories take this book to the next level. Job well done Ms. Adams, I look forward to more.
This is part of the "TREX" series but can be read as a standalone. Who doesn't like a 6'3" alpha bada$$ covert agent? -->THIS GIRL DOES!<-- Spencer Allen and Kathryn Davies have a serious love/hate relationship. Spencer is married to the job and can't let Kat in. Kathryn, the owner for a search and rescue mission that often partners with the TREX agents, also loves her job, but she wants a husband, kids and even a dog. Both of their histories play a large factor in who they are today. A year ago, they split up. Kat cried herself to sleep every night while Spencer threw himself into the job. But while rescuing a six-year old lost boy that turns into much more than just a missing kid case, those sparks fly once again and Spencer starts getting his head out of his ass and sees the happiness that's in front of him. But... so begins the back and forth of the great epiphanies (Kat) forget the past and be happy even if it means his job is dangerous. (Spencer) don't be afraid to love her even if it means she could get that knock on the door. Then, it was the reverse epiphanies of her never settling and him not putting her through that agony. It seriously killed the mood for me. There was no shortage of action-packed drama but there were quite a few characters and interwoven plots that it got a little muddled for me. Kudos for Spencer's, uh, "recovery" time ;) Overall 3.5 stars.
